Pollution in India
March 27th, 2009 by Kaitlyn M.

India Failing to Control Open Defecation Blunts Nation’s Growth

There is a major pollution problem in India.  More than half of India’s population does not have a toilet, which causes them to go other places. There are about 100,000 tons of human excretment left by the Indians every day in potatoe fields, carrot fields, and spinach fields.  The waste is also left along river banks which are used for bathing and drinking, and also along roads. This has created a big problem and 75% of the country’s surface water is contaminated by human and industrial waste.  The people living here are in great danger of consuming human waste.  Every day 1,000 children younger than 5 die due to complications related to the pollution. Also, because of the lack of bathrooms, many girls drop out of school.

Damodar river pollution in India-blame it on coal.

The Damodar river is considered to be a sacred river in India, however, there are many problems with it.  It is filled with sewage and toxic metals.  This river has about 46% of the India’s coal in it. This can effect human health. The lead contained in the river causes many health concerns such as anorexia,  metallic taste in the mouth, headache, drowsiness, high blood pressure and anaemia.

Both of these articles are about how pollution to the rivers in India can cause many health problems for those living there.

if people no that other people are going to the bathroom in the river, why do they keep bathing in it? Also if it’s a sacred river then shouldn’t they like not be able to do that?

I would think that they wouldn’t want their holy river to be as dirty as it is.

After a lot of kids die from the pollution you would think that they would do something. That’s really sad.

No one should be forced to drop out of school because of the lack of bathrooms. India has struggled with pollution problems for a long time. Especially in places like the Ganges river where hundreds of people bathe in everyday. Something should be done about the many pollution issues and the lack of necessary items (bathrooms) in India.

umm… not sure but im guessing they don’t have bathrooms because their poor ??? i don’t think they would just choose not to have bathrooms if they had a choice…

that doesn’t mean they HAVE to do it in the river, seeing as its holy. good thought though!

why doesn’t the government help out by trying to fix the bathroom problems and make a law saying you cannot go to the bathroom in the river?

Olivia C writes:

They dont really have a choice but to go in the river if they went on the land it would ruin their food!!!!! And the government has no money to fix the bathroom problems!!!!!!!

I think it sad just cause the school don;t have bathrooms that the girls drop out of school cause of lack of privacy. I really think India should take pride in thier childrens health and welll being. It means supplying bathroooms at schools

I think that if this is such a major problem, and so many people are either dying, or getting really sick from it, then they can do things to fix it. Like inventing some form of a toilet, and burying the waste underground in a place with little resources. The waste will disintegrate over time, and it can be a continuous cycle.

its a horrid thing. People not understand what those things can do to people.

But if thats the way they want to live then let them be… there are enough of our own problems as it.

where does all the waste go??? What should we do about this problem in th river?? We need to fix this river pollution problem. india is getting to over polluted.. we should give them bathrooms and toilets, showers so they can stop polluting it.

This is a big problem. They need to stop dumping their waste in the river cause it is ruining that ecosystem. so their government should probly find a way to fix this pretty soon.

If this river is so important to them they should find a way to keep people from polluting it. Some people don’t have a choice but to use the river as a bathroom, and if this is really as bad as they say, the government should find a way to provide public bathrooms or something.

I think that obviously after reading this blog pollution has become a serious problem and we need to help that. I mean come on no toilets that’s just sad and nasty. There is no way that i would live in India due to all that filth.
